    Uganda Securities Exchange : Equity turnover up as MTN leads activity

    Equity trading at the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) surged during the week, with turnover rising to sh638m from sh227m recorded the previous week.

    MTN Uganda spearheaded market activity, accounting for a turnover of sh308m according to market data from Crested Capital. Bank of Baroda (BOBU) followed closely with a turnover of sh230m.

    Umeme exchanged hands for sh57.8m while Stanbic Holdings saw deals worth sh38.5m. Airtel Uganda contributed sh1.7m to the total turnover. Meanwhile, Uganda Clays Limited (UCL) and NIC Holdings Limited (NIC) together accounted for a combined turnover of about sh1m.

    In terms of price movements, only three counters experienced changes during the week. Airtel Uganda led the pack with a gain of 11.33%, closing at sh90.18 per share. BOBU shares rose by 2.27% to settle at sh22.5, while MTN added 0.65% to reach sh271.76.

    Prices remained unchanged for Umeme at 415, Stanbic at sh46, UCL at sh8, and NIC at sh5 per share. 

    Cross-listed stocks also showed mixed performance. Centum Investments topped the gains with a jump of 14.25%, followed by Jubilee Holdings Limited which advanced 4.46%. Equity Group Holdings climbed 3.38%, and Nation Media Group appreciated by 3.03%. On the downside, KCB Group slipped marginally by 0.19%, while East African Breweries Limited declined by 1.22%.

    The USE All Share Index (ALSI) gained 2.12% to close at 1,330.77 points, while the local index added 2.99% to finish at 125.66 index points.
